How It All Began

In 2000, a group of young professionals came together through The Guardsmen, a San Francisco-based organization. Over time, their bond led them to seek out new challenges together, eventually sparking an interest in mountaineering.

Twenty-five years later, they’re climbing Mount Everest together — not just for the challenge, but to give back. Their goal is to raise funds for The Guardsmen’s Campership Program, helping more kids experience the confidence, resilience, and growth that comes from the outdoors.

After a few nights recuperating in Namche, we helicoptered back to Everest Base Camp and reunited with Chip at last. Now, after a few days of final prep and day hikes, Dean, Chip and I are ready to begin our summit push tonight at 2 AM.

The plan: 5 days of climbing — up to Camp 2 for a few nights, then Camp 3, Camp 4, and finally the summit. If all goes well, we’ll be standing on top of the world on May 22nd.

Everyone’s still dealing with the usual Everest ailments — lingering coughs, colds, and the kind of bugs that just don’t heal up here. But spirits are high, and it’s time to go. @garrettmadison1

I’ve been back down in Namche Bazaar (11,300 feet) with most of our team for the past three days, resting and doing some light hikes while we wait for a weather window. The good news is my HAPE is long gone, and the time down low has helped with all the little things—cuts, dry skin, stuff that just doesn’t heal higher up.

The fixed lines to the summit are in, but most teams are still holding back for now as the wind above camp 3 is brutal. We’re aiming to go toward the back of the wave, so our summit push is still likely several days to a week out. We head back to base camp tomorrow. The waiting is hard—physically, it’s been good for recovery, but mentally it’s tough not to dwell on what’s ahead.

This climb has been tougher—physically and emotionally—than anything I’ve done before. I’ve been battling doubts—about my health, my body, and whether I can handle what’s still ahead. The hardest parts are yet to come.

In any event, I’m trying to stay positive—focus on what’s going right and not dwell too much on what’s ahead. One foot in front of the other. @garrettmadison1

After our rotation to Camp 3 (23,500 ft) and back to Camp 2, I started showing signs of mild HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema)—a condition where fluid builds up in the lungs due to low oxygen. I was short of breath and had chest tightness.

I spent the night on oxygen at Camp 2, and the next morning was evacuated by helicopter to Base Camp. The 4,000-foot descent made all the difference—by the time I landed, the symptoms were gone.

Unfortunately, having had HAPE once means I’m now more susceptible to it when I go higher again. On the summit push, there’s a greater chance I may have to turn back if symptoms return. The good news is, we now have a 7-day rest window to recover fully before that final push.

And for the record—the scariest part of all this wasn’t the altitude or the symptoms… it was watching that helicopter land above me on a tiny ice platform. Unreal.

This post is kind of haphazard. We only get about 10 minutes of starlink. Made it through the ice falls to Camp 1 and took what pictures I could. It was awe inspiring, peaceful and terrifying all at the same time. I don’t know how many crevasses we jumped or crossed or climbed on ladders but it was a lot. Scenery is epic. #khumbuicefall #camp1 @garrettmadison1

Wednesday we hiked up to Pumori Base Camp while another group explored Sherpa Point—a solid day of exercise with incredible views.

Thursday was back to business with another round of ice training, including ladder work over crevasses. It was tough, technical, and honestly kind of fun.

Evenings at camp have been surprisingly festive, with Argentine ham, cheese, and wine courtesy of our guide Cacho—a welcome treat as we prepare for the next push.

Friday was a true rest day—no hikes, no training. Last Friday we took part in a Puja ceremony at Everest Base Camp — a traditional blessing asking the mountain for safe passage. We laid out our gear while a lama led prayers, tossed rice into the air, and filled camp with juniper smoke and fluttering prayer flags.

At the end, we shared the offerings to Buddha — rum, beer, and wine — and what started as a solemn ritual quickly turned into an afternoon dance party. At one point, the Nepalese guides even busted out their version of the Macarena.

Feeling grateful, grounded, and definitely smiling after a day like that.

It’s been a bit lonely, but I made the most of it — Tenzing took me on a hike up toward Pumori Base Camp, where I finally got my first real glimpse of Everest from base camp. This afternoon, a dusting of snow rolled in and made everything even more beautiful. Can’t wait to have the crew back tomorrow! @garrettmadison1 #everestbasecamp

We all met through The Guardsmen back in 2000, and in 2009, Tom, Chip, Alden, and I climbed Mt. Whitney for Chip’s 40th birthday—our first summit together. Over the past sixteen years, some combination of that crew has tackled a dozen-plus peaks, joined along the way by incredible old and new friends like Dean Poulakidas, Craig Straub, Jeff Landry, Peter Hooker, Jeff Gordman, David Rich, Brandon Rich, John Keagy, and others.

For Everest, the original four have reunited—joined by fellow Guardsman and mountaineer Dean. Tom is trekking to base camp, and Alden, sidelined by a health issue, still made the trip to Kathmandu to see us off. True to his Be Unstoppable spirit, he continues to push us toward our goals.

We left Pheriche this morning and headed deeper into the high Himalayas. After a stop in Dughla, we made the steep climb to the Thukla Pass, where memorials honor climbers who lost their lives on Everest—a sobering moment.

The trail then leveled out as we continued to Lobuche, now at 16,200 feet. The air is thin, and every step takes more effort, but the views are unreal. The Khumbu Glacier is now in sight.

Two days a week, I climb the Lyon Street steps—well known to most San Franciscans. There are 291 steps in total, broken into two sections: 125 on the steeper bottom half and 166 on the top. The total elevation gain is about 150 feet per lap, and I typically aim for 1,500 feet, or around 10 laps.

I wear a rucksack loaded with 40 to 70 pounds, depending on my goal for the day. When I started, it took me about 90 minutes to complete 10 laps with 50 pounds. Now, five months into training, I can do it in just over an hour. Interestingly, my biggest improvement in time came after I started sleeping in the altitude tent. #everest #lyonstreetsteps

Countdown to Everest is on—leaving next week!

A few people asked about our training so thought I’d post a few videos. Part of my training has involved simulated altitude exposure using an altitude generator. In this clip, I’m doing Intermittent Hypoxic Training (IHT) with a mask at altitudes between 9,000–12,000 ft.

Countdown to Everest is on—leaving next week!

A few people asked about our training so thought I’d post a few videos. Part of my training has involved simulated altitude exposure using an altitude generator. In this clip, I’m doing Intermittent Hypoxic Training (IHT) with a mask at altitudes between 9,000–12,000 ft.

After 8 days off the grid, Dean Poulakidas and I summited on Monday, January 8th. The experience was surreal, being in such a remote, cold, and beautiful place with no living creatures around. The extreme cold made it challenging to take pictures above 13,000 ft, with temperatures as low as -36 degrees F, -60 degrees F with windchill, where frostbite can develop in as little as a minute. It's definitely one of my favorite adventures, but I'm happy to be back in civilization. Attached are a few pics I thought were interesting.

Bittersweet day for me, came down from a successful summit of Mt. Vinson in Antarctica only to learn my lifelong friend Jesus DeSousa passed away a few days ago. He was closer to a brother than a friend for a long time. I’m so thankful several of us were able to spend some quality time together a few years back in CA. My thoughts go out to the DeSousa family and Vickie Gallant.

Zeus – may you finally find the peace you sought. And as for the Ferrari I still owe you, I’m sure there is a race track waiting for us in heaven.

Once again Ntirra’s family gave us a warm welcome, with numerous gifts including a cow given to Garrett, which he promptly named Bessie. I was given the honor of slaughtering a goat for our lunch. Since I don’t love the taste of goat I suggested next time we slaughter Bessie :).

Despite Garrett being medevacked off Mt Kenya on Day 2 of our trip at 11’000 ft for a 2 day stint in Nanyuki Cottage Hospital, we still managed to summit Pt Lenana yesterday at 16,354 feet. So proud of Garrett for attempting to summit again despite this setback. Many thanks to Global Rescue, African Ascents, Everwild Africa and Dr. Butt (yes that is his name) for helping navigate this and making a summit still possible!

Axl you have a been a constant and beloved companion for almost 17 years. The thought of life without you is unbearable, but I know the time for you to rest has come. You taught us so much about empathy, love and compassion, always ready with a wagging tail and warm snuggle. You are with us always in our hearts and have left an indelible mark on our lives. Rest in Peace my good boy.

“Oloserian” (“Man of peace”) is the Maasai name given to Garrett by the village elders in Ntirra’s village yesterday. Ntirra hosted our family to a traditional goat feast in celebration of our families coming together. Ntirra honored Garrett with a full Maasai outfit, a shuka , including a very special gift of a Maasai knife given to Ntirra by his father. We’re forever grateful for Ntirra’s friendship and the opportunity to meet his family! We hope to host him in San Francisco soon!
